Overview:
Oxygen is a critical ingredient in composting, and often becomes a limiting
factor. Aeration is the cure. The problem: commercially made Windrow Turners built for the purpose of aerating compost are prohibitively expensive.
The quest for affordable composting technologies for farmers inspired this design; a
PTO-driven, tractor-drawn Windrow Turner that can be fabricated on the farm or
in a local fabrication shop for approximately $3,550 in materials and 130-140
hours in labor. It can be used
to manage compost windrows five feet high and up to 12 feet wide.
The project requires welding and cutting skills, a basic understanding of hydraulics, and some basic machine shop tools and operations.
