Remove food scraps from the school at a frequency that works best for the school, at least once per week. If food scraps are not removed daily, it is preferable to store the containers inside during the winter months to prevent freezing. Bin systems are small enough that adding frozen food scraps will slow down the biological activity. To save on time as the food scraps are brought out to the system, your carbon materials can be pre-mixed according to the proportions provided to you. Food scraps should be layered with carbon materials, with no more than 4 inches of any one type of material per layer. Take special care to make sure that no food scraps are left uncovered in the compost pile; always cover fresh food scraps with several inches of carbon-rich material.
