Monitoring compost piles is done for several reasons. Primarily, monitoring is done to provide the composter with insight as to what is happening in the compost pile during composting, such as the microbial activity and other pile conditions that will impact microbial activity. This information can in turn impact the management choices you make in your composting operation, regarding the specific piles you are monitoring and/or how you make and manage compost in general. Monitoring provides you with a feedback loop for maintaining optimal composting conditions and producing a quality product.
